The Nichibukan Naginata Dojo GSAF 24’

The Nichibukan Naginata Dojo (part of the Japanese Swordsmanship Society) is coming to GSAF! Naginata is a traditional Japanese martial art, practiced with a 6 to 9 foot weapon similar to a glaive. Unique compared to other Japanese weaponry, the Naginata is particularly effective for midrange and close quarter fighting due to its length and its ambidextrous techniques. Rebecca Pomeroy (3-dan) will be leading a demonstration of the art, and members of the dojo will be available throughout the day to respond to questions and provide information about how to start practicing in NJ.

Rebecca Pomeroy has been practicing naginata since 2011 and holds the rank of 3-dan. She began her practice under the late Sachiko Yamauchi-Prough sensei (kyoshi) at Mount Holyoke College with the Kachimushi Naginata Club. She now practices with Ellery Engalla sensei (5-dan) at the Nichibukan Naginata Dojo in New Jersey. Rebecca regularly competes in regional, national, and international competitions. Based on her success in these competitions, Rebecca has been selected to represent the USA in Women's Individuals at the World Naginata Championships in 2019 and 2024, as well as Engi-Kyogi (forms) in 2024 with Jessica Espinosa (3-dan, UConn Naginata instructor).

Rebecca currently resides in Rockaway Township, NJ, and is looking to establish a dojo in the area. Let her know if you are interested!
